Samsung 65 Inch Class 4k Crystal Uhd Hdr Smart Tv – Buying a TV is hard, especially when you’re a picky person. Because the world of TV is so much better and there are so many options to choose from. At the same time, TV prices have generally declined, but they are still expensive. Then, what if it is about KES 120K? Which brands do you prefer and what motivates you to make purchasing decisions?
I say this because I’m testing the Samsung 65-inch Class AU8000 Crystal UHD Smart TV. It’s the UHD 8 series, meaning it’s made for 2021. It’s black, has an updated stand, excellent 4K production, and an overall slimmer package for the money. My reservation is still valid, but I’ve come to like it too. HDR performance is average, and brightness isn’t as high as we’d like. As you know, good HDR production is closely related to brightness, and if the brightness is not too high, some problems arise.

Do not misunderstand. It’s worth noting that this is a problem specific to me. Most people are perfectly fine with a 65 inch stir. We’ve only seen better sets, but in Samsung’s defense, those TVs cost a lot, and the Crystal lineup is here to fill that gap, a market that wants quality and large TVs at a good price.

Before we give you a brief and subjective opinion about this TV, there are a few things you should know about Samsung’s Crystal UHD TV. First, crystal displays are often cheaper (there are cheaper older models and non-smart/digital only TVs). Crystal TV is perfect for the purpose it was designed for, streaming content from a variety of platforms.
All of them have 4K resolution and support HDR for better color performance, but at a budget level. This means the TV I’m testing isn’t as bright as I’d expect from a high-end TV.
Simply put, Crystal UHD is basically an entry-level LCD LED panel from Samsung. A marketing term similar to what other manufacturers, such as LG, use for their NanoCell marketing phrases.
The home model is the AU8000, which measures 65 inches diagonally. Unlike the 2020 model, which starts with TU instead of AU, it is a 2021 model.

Finally, the AU model has improved over the 2020 release with better features including more HDMI sockets, a new processor and better color performance.
Note: Samsung makes QLED TVs. These OLEDs are not the best on the market (made by LG and Sony, etc.). The Q in LED stands for quantum, and you can get brighter and more colorful images with the same technology as OLED. QLEDs are not self-illuminating, so they are comparable to OLEDs in terms of burn-in elimination, but less prone to burn-in (most buyers do not experience issues with OLEDs).
Samsung has a better technology called Neo QLED which was first launched in 2021. They use much smaller LEDs so you can pack a lot more technology into the frame. Neo QLEDs offer better features such as additional local dimming zones, improved light management that increases contrast, and more.

There are also three HDMI ports and next to them an optical socket that can be used to connect a soundbar.
One of the HDMI ports also has eARC, an enhanced form of Audio Return Channel. ARC is important if you want to connect a home theater or complex soundbar system to a TV, as it allows audio to travel from the speakers to the TV using a single cable, reducing the number of cables required to fully connect the system. This improves the quality and latency of the audio signal.
If you want to use the AV and antenna inputs as well, here they are, dated (specifically AV), but still might help someone.
Basically, you won’t miss anything here unless you’re the picky type who wants multiple HDMI ports.

They are made of plastic and are not as sturdy as metal. They also sit flush on the TV console, a neater look than standing on two legs.
The best thing about them? Well, it’s adjustable. This means you can stand up the unit in a way that gives your TV more space, a soundbar. The sound bar sent by Samsung is too low, so I don’t think it’s necessary.
Also, this stand doesn’t need to be screwed to the bottom of the TV (sorry!). Just take it out of the box and put it in your PC.
However, Samsung Kenya was generous and nice enough to give away one of those QLED TV remotes.

Second, there is a small solar panel on the back that allows you to charge the battery through solar power.
Well, for one thing, I couldn’t get it to work with a voice assistant that could only be operated with the original remote.
If you buy this TV, you won’t get this nice remote that also has shortcuts to Netflix and Prime Video. But I also wish there was YouTube.
From the spec sheet above, you can see that the TV supports a major voice assistant besides Siri, so it can respond to your barking. It has Alexa, Google Assistant, and Samsung’s Bixby.

Like I said, I’ve never tested it, and I’ve never really been a fan of Bixby, so I prefer to test with the Google Assistant. I’ve never used Alexa because it doesn’t fit my tech lifestyle.
This is the software that powers the TV and Samsung’s in-house TV OS (the Korean tech company has since stopped including Tizen in its phones).
If you’ve used Tizen on your TV before, the features you’ll find in the Crystal UHD 65” will get you right at home. This is because the interface is familiar and easy to understand even for beginners.
The app sits on the bottom bar which acts as a navigation panel for all your software/settings.

You can access the App Store here, and once you’ve downloaded an app, you can add it to your home screen for easy access.
For store information, you cannot download apps without a Samsung ID, so make sure you have a Samsung ID. If not, the system will help you set it up.
In terms of speed, Tizen is quite fast. It’s not sluggish and the smoothness matches what I got on the Mi TV box a few years ago. Keep in mind, though, that this is an entry-level 4K TV with a big screen, so it doesn’t include the best chipset Samsung has to offer.
For example, I compared the speed and smoothness to my friend’s Neo QLED TV, and I could tell the difference because the latter was much faster.

I also get a bit of stuttering while typing, which is what frustrates me the most, but I’ve learned to live with it. Not a deal breaker, just nitpicking here.

The TV defaults to standard, and we had it throughout our entire review period.
Others just look pretty. Movies and directors push yellow, but people with good eyes seem to enjoy movies that way, that is, as the director intended. But mods aren’t just for me, I can use them when I need them.

Expert settings allow you to personalize your photo settings by changing brightness, contrast, sharpness, color and more.
What I would say is that you don’t have to worry about that because the TV has you covered and there are always settings you will love.

This is an LCD panel. We’ve seen better panels from other television manufacturers, but there’s always one TV that ruins the other, especially when it comes to HDR performance.

Apps like Prime Video and Netflix have 4K HDR shows and movies, but they don’t come out as brightly as I’d like on this TV. This is because the brightness is lowered to match the price of the TV.
